Look forward to our version. The floating over of the melody line of C#'s (concert) into C's from bar 4 to 5 "I've got a right to hang around" just kills me - there's something cool and sensual about it.
That Arlen guy had some great changes going....Tom the Piper's Sonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11276483798334833387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19189721.post-43496377564180163432009-03-19T08:03:00.000-07:002009-03-19T08:03:00.000-07:00Elizabeth -Boy, life gets complicated when one's d...Elizabeth -
Boy, life gets complicated when one's dog is "on the stuff" too. There was probably some growling when it was Billie's turn to fix.
Seriously, it had probably gotten to the point where the dog was only "person" to be trusted.

As unsparing as the book was regarding Billie's life it was very informative about the peripheral people and music as well. I think Billie was happier being "one of the guys" as it were, meaning a part of the musical whole and not the sole focus.Tom the Piper's Sonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11276483798334833387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19189721.post-40729348587902832452009-03-18T13:43:00.000-07:002009-03-18T13:43:00.000-07:00Digging this tune. My sis and I were walking Nelson today and somehow found ourselves on the subject of Billie shooting up her dog. That poor woman was so screwed up ... and yet she created some incredibly potently beautiful stuff – much of which, we must assume, had its interpretative origins in her rotten life.Trombonologyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04780935010435443785noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19189721.post-44160721275937013752009-03-16T11:10:00.000-07:002009-03-16T11:10:00.000-07:00Great session all around, that. I had to dig out my Teddy Wilson disc to refresh myself on who was playing guitar – John Truehart, who worked, for a time, with Chick Webb; nice rhythm. That whole session, in fact, is marvelous – "I Wished on the Moon"; "What a Little Moonlight Can Do" and "A Sunbonnet Sue" being the other sides. Goodman cut out before the last record was made; he'd contributed beautifully already, though.Trombonologyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04780935010435443785noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19189721.post-73436028052805598762009-03-13T08:25:00.000-07:002009-03-13T08:25:00.000-07:00I've been enjoying "Miss Brown To You&quo...I've been enjoying "Miss Brown To You" very much of late. Again, that Louis-like-trumpet vocal with just enough gravel to the sweetness. That little bit of Benny Goodman in the beginning and him together with the very brash Mr.Eldridge in the send out chorus also floors me....

http://searchservice.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=sitesearch.results&type=Music&qry=Miss%20Brown%20to%20You&submit=Search&orig=music_home_searchTom the Piper's Sonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11276483798334833387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19189721.post-909868120078901992009-03-13T08:12:00.000-07:002009-03-13T08:12:00.000-07:00Elizabeth -I think of the blog you once wrote abou...Elizabeth -
I think of the blog you once wrote about hearing Billie's "I Hear Music" - a prime example of the joy she could spread. Things like "Now They Call It Swing", "When You're Smiling",all of those little numbers she did with Teddy Wilson (and yes, even Whiteman!) et al; a little more than 2 minutes in some cases, and one or two choruses from Billie, Lester, and the rest changed a lot lives I'm sure. Mine too.

Glad to hear you've heard enough of Frankie newton to be on a similar wavelength about him - i shouldn't be surprised :)Tom the Piper's Sonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11276483798334833387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19189721.post-90446553992113090182009-03-12T20:43:00.000-07:002009-03-12T20:43:00.000-07:00This afternoon in the car, I was listening to Will...This afternoon in the car, I was listening to William, as the Count affectionately called her, doing "Trav'lin' Light," accompanied by, (of all aggregations) Paul Whiteman's Orchestra ... and I was thinking, as I always do when I hear her, That girl has perfect instincts. 'Cos that's what I think it was with Billie – pure instinct. She had a gift, she was a genius ... and she just knew what to do.

I think it's a darn shame that both (the albeit profoundly important) "Strange Fruit" and the hard luck gal image have become so prominent in the collective understanding of Billie. There was a lot of humor and playfulness in her approach and the subsequent records – along with a lot of other marvelous stuff, which deserves equal attention. Her "Blues" – undeniably, though – is so genuine; you have a sense that the performance came from experience. For my dough, nobody sang the blues like Billie, Louis and Jack Teagarden, the last of whom, I know you know, claimed the Arlen-Koehler gem as his theme.

Yeah, I wouldn't have chosen altoist Smith for that date (a little too gabby for my taste), but he shows more restraint than usual here and makes a nice statement. Very happy to find you singing Frankie Newton's praises; his work hasn't gotten the attention, among the masses, that it deserves. Economy and an intriguing tone – your Miles comparison is most apt.

Just a terrific study of a record, a singer, a song and a composer.Trombonologyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04780935010435443785noreply@blogger.com
